Distribution of Income

Is it just me, or does the sound of "the distribution of income" sound as though the govt and others believe that each persons earnings belong, in fact, to the nation, collectively?

Swanky Resorts or just another College Campus?

I remember when I was trying to go for scholarships to the UA, and the scholarship committee for the alumni scholarship I was going for said that a great reason to come to the UA was because of the integrated learning center. Sure its great being able to type anywhere in the area without a cord to connect the computer to the internet, but is it worth the money? Is all the construction, the green grass that died within a semester, and LCD screens worth the money when the UA has had to remove departments, cut professors, etc?

In describing the new student union, which, by the way, Likins says is the best in the US, my gen-chem prof last year even went so far as to describe it as a mall with a food court, movie theatre, and clinque counter (yes, there is one in the bookstore).

Eh, but this is not new; other colleges have also been picking up on it.

To say the least though, I wish I knew where a golf course was...near by.

Why I don't like McCain [Part II]

On the effect of the campaign finance reform act, which McCain sponsored: The law sharply restricts the opportunity for these major political players to arrange, pay for, and broadcast campaign-season ads that promote their policy positions with the voters in the hope that the messages will translate into the election of their allies to national office.

Why I don't Like McCain [Part I]

Reason #1: Senators John McCain (R., Ariz.) and Joe Lieberman (D., Conn.) are deeply concerned about the issue of global climate change. So much so that they are cosponsoring the Climate Stewardship Act in the Senate this month, a Kyoto-like measure which would impose extra costs on greenhouse-gas-emitting industries such as energy and manufacturing, and will set up a whole new welfare agency to compensate those whose heating costs go up as a result. [...]Senator McCain, for instance, who used to be opposed to extra energy taxes.

Animal Cruelty

I remember reading somewhere that a society is judged by how it treats its pets and elderly. I want to add to this list how it treats its children.

But this made me cry when I read it. How can someone treat an animal so cruelly? But then I could ask how could someone murder their own child.

Diversity at ASU

ASU President Michael Crow said he was not satisfied with diversity at ASU, but was pleased with progress the University has made in that area. [...]"What will the work force look like if universities are not diverse?" he said. Crow emphasized "intellectual diversity" - the idea that diversity not only comes from ethnicity, but also from economical status, background, gender and ideas. "The fight to attain a mature level of diversified intellectual thinking is a war - a war to attain levels of social justice we have only dreamed about," he said. Affirmative action is just one tool to attain social justice, Crow said. Crow: ASU needs to increase diversity

So, is social justice the new euphemism for racism, sexism, and classism?
